“Wikipedia, China, and knowledge sharing: a hands-on wiki-editing workshop”
with Writing for the Digital World instructor Dr Jedidiah Evans
Wikipedia is the largest and most popular knowledge-sharing enterprise in human history. While the website has helped create a global community of collaborators, it has also been met with criticism from countries such as China, whose own internet encyclopaedia, Baidu Baike, far exceeds Wikipedia’s popularity and reach on the mainland.
Since 2015, the Chinese-version of Wikipedia has been banned on mainland China, and earlier this year all language versions of Wikipedia were blocked.
Despite these restrictions, the English-language Wikipedia continues to develop China-related entries, overwhelmingly created and maintained by North American and European users.
