Film Studies: Screening of Klute
Dr Susan Potter will present a screening of Klute
Alan J. Pakula’s 1971 neo-noir Klute was re-released by the Criterion Collection earlier this month. Klute is the first film of Pakula’s “paranoia trilogy,” alongside The Parallax View (1974) and All The President’s Men (1976). Jane Fonda received the Academy Award for her portrayal of sex worker Bree, for whom unwanted implication in political drama, framed as homicidal, is countered by the film’s interest in agency within intimate structures and plots. Criterion collection describes Klute as a ‘character study thick with dread,’ an atmosphere conjured by Gordon Willis’ cinematographic minimalism and use of negative space.
